Q: Can you please tell our readers your real name as well as your stage name?
A: My real and stage name is Zenlee. My birth and legal name is Sokly.
Q: Where are you from and Where were you based?
A: I was born in a United Nations Refugee Camp in the 1980’s. My family settled in Canada in 1989 and have since called Ontario our home. For most of my life I resided in St. Thomas, Ontario. I have also lived in Toronto, London, Guelph and Hamilton, Ontario. My studio is based in St. Thomas. At one time, I had a studio in Toronto as well.
Q: At What age did you start making music?
A: Music has always been a big part of my life since I was around 6 or 7 years old. Believe it or not, I joined the church choir at that age and also played a couple of instruments in the school band. I was about 18 when I started producing music. It’s was the early 2000’s and I was messing around with music recording. There was an online community that I frequented where it was quite common to experience music postings and rap battles. I recorded a few tracks then to join the battle but didn’t go too far with that ambition. It wasn’t until my business partner met in the summer of 2016 that music production went from hobby to serious ambition. Once we registered our Record Label that year, I started to produce music knowing that eventually many people would be listening to my tracks.
Q: What genre of music do you love? Or what genre would you consider yourself?
(e.g- Rock? Blues? Hip-Hop? RnB?)
A: I like all genres, even a little bit of country believe it or not. There’s inspiration in all genres so I don’t limit myself. However, for the past 2 years, I have been heavily invested in the world of Rap, Hip Hop and R&B music. I also have a passion for Spoken Word as those poetic presentations often bring up topics that more relate to the current state of the world.
Q: Tell us about your latest track or Video ( what is it all about)
—–Please explain the concept or message behind it:
A: My latest album (and also my first) is called “Just Poetry.” The concept behind the album was to create tracks that documented my reactions to life events. I didn’t really focus on movements or anything like that, the main purpose was to channel my emotions and express myself in the most poetic manner possible.
“Just Poetry” is actually a play on words, which there seem to be a lot of within my tracks. In once instance, you might say that my album is just a collection of poetry. On the other hand, you might say it’s justified poetry as the content can be a lot for younger audiences to take in.
The main messages that I wanted to promote was to encourage people to believe in yourself, respect others, and definitely don’t judge a book by it’s cover.
Q: Who wrote it?
A:. I write all of songs as do the other artists featured on my album. In some instance we collaborate to make sure that the right message is being sent out with the tracks.
Q: What inspired you to write this new album
A: It came down to me reaching a point in my life where I wasn’t really happy with where I was in life and wanted to enrich myself with music. I wanted to create my own opportunities within the music industry and my album is the break I’m hoping to get from it.
Q: Where do you get your musical inspiration?
A: Anywhere and everywhere. Mostly personal experiences, thoughts and reactions. However, I find inspiration where ever I come across something that peaks my interests and imagination.
Q: If you were given a chance, which Artist would you love to perform with?
A: B.o.B., Post Malone, Honey Cocaine, Tyga.. the list goes on. I’m open to working with other artists to produce music and perform. If there’s an opportunity to get myself out there in the music world, I just might grab the bull by the horns and go for the ride.
