The Interview

Q: Can You please tell our readers your real name as well as your stage name?

A: My name is Esther Pennell and That is also my stage name. My spirit name is Nibi Kwe which means Water Woman.

Q: How old are you?

A: I am 44 years young.

Q: Where are you from and Where were you born?

A: I was born in a small town in Northern Ontario Canada. I currently live in Temagami, Ontario.

Q: At What age did you start making music?

A: When I was a little girl I would sing at family gatherings and barn dances. But my music career really started about 6 years ago, when I bought a banjo at a hock shop and decided to teach myself how to play it. I had my first on stage performance with my gal pals at our local annual Girls Night Out show. Then, a little over 2 years ago I wrote my first song “Owl Song” and I have been writing music since then. I have written about 40 songs now. And have just released my 2nd full-length album.

Q: What genre of music do you particularly love? Jazz? Hip-Hop? RnB?

A: I like all kinds of music, but I love Folk Roots and Blues/Country the most.

Q: Who is your favorite artist and why?

A: I am a big John Prine fan. I am all about the lyrics, I love how he paints a picture with his words without being complicated. I also really like Jim Croce, Cat Stevens, Gordon Lightfoot and my favorite country singer/songwriter is Loretta Lynn.

Q: What are your hobbies?

A: Music is my hobby. I enjoy sitting around a kitchen table jamming with friends, I love going to see live music at small venues and I love a good nature walk and fishing.

Q: Do you play any musical instrument?

A: I play the banjo, but I have my own style on it as I am self-taught. I also play a bit of guitar and am learning to play banjolele (ukulele banjo)

Q: Where do you get your musical inspiration?

A: My musical inspiration comes from my life experiences and my deep connection with Mother Earth. My songs are about the “human experience” being a mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. They are about coping with life’s ups and downs and how I see myself in this world. I recently lost a child and from that experience, I wrote quite a few songs as part of my healing journey. The song “Since You’ve Been Gone” is written to my son about how my life has changed since he passed into the spirit world.

Q: Who is your hero?

A: My hero? That’s a tough question. I think I would have to say my daughter is my hero. She is a strong unique woman who is always striving to grow and change. She is an amazing mother.

My other Heros would be our Indigenous Women who are making a difference in today’s world, fighting for our Mother Earth and fighting to save our Water.

My Spirit Name is ” Nibi Kwe” Water Woman. So the water warriors have a special place in my heart.

Q: Do you write your own music?

A: I write my own music, yes. I have been writing steadily for over 2 years. Every challenge or celebration is a chance to write something new.

Q: If you were given a chance, which Artist would you love to perform with?

A: I would love to perform with a local indigenous band called “Digging roots”
