In our next top 15 countdown, we will be featuring 43 year old Canadian Folk and Country Singer, Esther Pennell with one of her inspirational tracks, “The Owl Song”.
The owl song is one of her first tracks she wrote and as usual is a music that illustrates her experience in life and what it’s all about. The song has it’s roots from the old country folk tale and could easily be related with by anyone.
The song is entertaining in a kind of way, its a fusion of country and funk style of music of the old 70’s. The country-funk style of the “Owl Song” could be related to Hoyt Axton’s California Women.
My musical inspiration comes from my life experiences and my deep connection with Mother Earth. My songs are about the “human experience” being a mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. They are about coping with life’s ups and downs and how I see myself in this world. I recently lost a child and from that experience, I wrote quite a few songs as part of my healing journey. The song “Since You’ve Been Gone” is written to my son about how my life has changed since he passed into the spirit world.
Her music is pure and undiluted. She sings from the heart and tries to express her emotions and experience through her songs. This makes her unique. Her use of the Banjo is also one of the interesting thing about her song, how the songs are purely mixed with the Banjo.
